Surrey RCMP have determined there is no criminal investigation after a City of Surrey-owned car was returned with extensive front-end damage to a construction yard.

Surrey County. Jack Hundial said the car appears to be the one driven by outgoing Mayor Doug McCallum during his tenure. Hundial tweeted a picture of the white Buick with damage above the passenger-side wheel well on Sunday, a day after McCallum lost the civic election to former Surrey councilor Brenda Locke.

Hundial said city staff told him about the damaged car on Sunday, noting that “it appears to be (McCallum’s) car, as that is what he had been driving for the past four years.”

Police confirmed on Monday that an investigation has been launched into how the car exploded. As of Monday evening, the RCMP determined there was no criminal offense and that their investigation had concluded.

Hundial said in the tweet that the mayor returning the city-funded car with damage was “a final ‘FU’ for the residents of Surrey.”

A city spokesman confirmed that the damaged car is the one delivered to the mayor, but declined to comment further: “Mayor Doug McCallum’s vehicle was returned to the city sometime this week. week. As the matter is being reviewed, the City will not be commenting at this time.”

McCallum lost his bid for re-election to a fifth term on Saturday night, with Locke receiving just under 1,000 more votes in a race where the RCMP’s transition to a new Surrey Police Service was an issue important Locke and his Surrey Connect party have pledged to keep the Mounties in the city.

Locke and Hundial, who is a former Mountie, have been at odds with McCallum for most of his tenure over terminating the city’s contract with the RCMP.
