Liam Hampson, missing Queensland rugby league player, found dead in a nightclub in Barcelona

A Queensland rugby league player has been found dead in a nightclub in Barcelona after falling from up to ten metres, police say.

Redcliffe Dolphins young gun Liam Hampson, 24, went missing during a trip to Spain earlier this week.

A close friend has since revealed Hampson had only joined the holiday at the last minute, telling 102.9fm he wasn’t originally due to go on the end-of-season trip until Redcliffe were knocked out of the final of the QCup ahead of time.

On Thursday morning AEDT, Barcelona Police confirmed to 7NEWS that a body believed to be Hampson’s had been found.

“This morning staff at the nightclub where Liam was last seen found a body on the floor in an area of the nightclub, Sala Apolo,” they said.

It is believed that he fell from a height of 10 meters. His death is being treated as an accident.

Hampson’s sister Tiarna shared a post on Instagram, saying she had woken up to the “saddest news possible”.

“We are devastated to learn that Liam was involved in an accident and did not survive.

“We are heartbroken. Liam was the best brother I could have asked for and made me a better person.

“We cannot express our pain.”

Hampson’s father Brett wrote on Facebook that he had woken up to “the news no one wants to hear”.

“We are heartbroken to say the least. Liam had a heart of gold and was a much loved son, brother, grandson, uncle and friend. Words cannot express our grief,” she said.

“We can’t thank his teammates enough for being there with Liam having the time of his life and helping in the search for our boy. Our thoughts are with them.”

Both Brett and Tiarna asked for privacy and thanked the people they were traveling with for helping with the search.

His disappearance prompted calls for help from Gold Coast Titans star AJ Brimson, who was traveling with him.

Hampson had traveled around Europe with close mate Brimson, as well as Brisbane Broncos duo Jordan Riki and Jesse Arthars.

“He could not be reached and has not been seen for 24 hours,” Brimson wrote.

“I was traveling with a group and very out of character, any information would be greatly appreciated.”

Riki reposted it later in the evening, saying: “Please help or share this, it’s so scary for us all, he’s our best mate we want to find him.”

Broncos player Jordan Riki, who was traveling with Hampson and had been part of the search, has since launched a GoFundMe to support his loved ones.

More than $50,000 was raised in just three hours on Thursday to help the Hampson family bring their son home.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is providing assistance.

Tributes come from the NRL community

The NRL community is in mourning following the news of Hampson’s death.

At 24, the talented hooker was chasing his NRL dream. His family was at every game.

Dolphins captain Cameron Cullen told 7NEWS the team was struggling with the news.

“He had an impact on the field, but he also had such a big impact off the field,” he told 7NEWS.
