Homicide detectives have “several lines of inquiry”, NSW Police said today.
“We do not believe this is a random act and potentially the victim and someone else know each other,” said John Nelson of Nepean Police Area Command.
“He returned to the site in the early hours of the morning and sometime between then and 2.30pm something happened to this poor young lady.”
The police have reported that the woman was staying at the house, which belonged to friends.
He said they are investigating how the woman met her killer and whether he may have been online.
The occupants of the home are assisting with inquiries, Nelson said.
A neighbor told 9News they were “gutted.”
Investigators are appealing for anyone who saw any suspicious behavior in the area early Sunday to contact Crime Stoppers.
