The Game Awards have recently become an extremely polished production, minus the last-minute scenarios, but it’s essentially the Oscars and E3 that have become one in terms of industry importance, especially now that E3 has been actively ground into dust.
That’s why it was rather strange to see Xbox not really have a presence at the show, when rivals like PlayStation closed the show with a Final Fantasy XVI spot and Nintendo had a movie star present a clip from the new movie. Mario’s movie. Xbox had a generic commercial that ran during the show that focused on Game Pass, but that was essentially it.
It’s especially strange considering 2023 is supposed to be a big year for Xbox with the release of Redfall and Starfield, and if Starfield is anything like Bethesda’s other past successes like the mainline Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, this game itself he could be a GOTY leader in a year. , in theory.
Both games were pushed back from 2022 and into 2023, though they still don’t have actual release dates. Redfall is supposed to come out in the first half of the year, but I’m not sure Starfield has committed to a new window yet, let alone a date, although most estimates also say early six months of 2023.

It seems like this would have been a prime time, in front of nearly 100 million viewers, to show off more of the game and announce when it was coming, but instead… nothing. Although Xbox executives Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond attended, they did not use the show to debut anything. Not those two key 2023 games, or a look at something further in the future like Fable or Perfect Dark.
While Microsoft was awarded Publisher of the Year by Metacritic in 2021, here in 2022, they had few nominations in key categories, while rival Sony had God of War Ragnarok taking award after award and Horizon Forbidden West getting at least nominations. Microsoft’s biggest win was As Dusk Falls in the “Games for Impact” category. But that’s up against Sony taking home Best Narrative, Music, Audio Design, Acting, Action/Adventure and Sports/Racing, while Nintendo had Best Action, Family, Simulation/Strategy, Multiplayer and More anticipated Xbox didn’t even have a game nominated in most of these categories. It’s been a pretty blank year for them overall, and this could have been a chance to show that 2023 won’t be like that. Instead they said nothing. strange
