He said Monday night was likely to be slightly colder than the night before, possibly with lows of -10C or -11C, while the snow and ice warning for northern Scotland could extend into Thursday.
Cold weather with sleet, sleet and snow will continue on Wednesday and Thursday before becoming “more changeable” on Friday, with milder conditions at the weekend, with “a real pick-up in temperatures”.
Rod Dennis, spokesman for the RAC, said: “After last week’s flooded roads, it is now ice that poses the greatest danger to drivers.
“Anyone out and about should take extra care when driving on country roads or other quiet roads that have not been paved. The key, as always, is to slow down so drivers have as much time as possible to react if they their cars lose grip.
“And while this week’s cold snap will be much shorter than the freezing conditions we saw in December that led to the RAC’s busiest week, we still expect to see a big increase in breakdowns.
“Batteries that fail in the cold will be the main reason to call us, but people whose cars start up are more likely to need our help with tire problems.”
