Here’s Simon Mail’s Spurs report…

Spurs haven’t managed a shot on target in the second half, which pretty much sums it up.
“Will, on a positive note, the quality of entertainment can only go up from here. Right? Please.” There is always hope Mary Waltz.
“How long until Harry Kane asks for a transfer?” asks Mike Mackenzie. He may not be too keen on staying under Conte next season…

Spurs couldn’t create anything of note. It was a display of submission on their part. They need Bentancur, Kulusevski and Richarlison back soon.
There was quality in the assists for both of Villa’s goals. Watkins did well to beat Lloris to the ball and set up Buendia and McGinn’s pass for Douglas Luiz was excellent.

Villa executed Emery’s game plan to perfection, biding their time to get the opener and then controlling the game. The spurs were horrible.

90+6 minutes: Villa look more likely to score a third than Spurs to shoot one. Watkins heads a corner over the bar to prove my point.
90+4 mins: Chambers is mainly on the pitch for fouling Son and is booked after a couple in a row. Whatever keeps Spurs out of the Villa half I suppose.
90+2 minutes: The crowd and the team were flat today. No one cares that there are seven minutes left to score twice.
90 minutes: waste of time and that doesn’t mean we’re going to put up with another seven minutes of this.

88 min: Son cuts in and hits a shot on goal, but Bednarek stops him before he can trouble Olsen.
Skipp and Spence will come for Hojbjerg and Perisic. Not sure what these two can offer.
86 mins: Spurs have been pretty awful overall. Limited creativity. They are missing some of their most creative players, but they should do better than that.
Romero absolutely crashes into Coutinho on the touchline for no reason and should get a second booking, but is instead awarded a service. How strange.
“Kulusevski is the only Spurs player who provides a consistent offensive spark,” suggests Jim Boyd. “You can say he doesn’t play without being told. I need it today.
“They might as well use this World Cup version of Richarlison.”
Minute 84: Villa gets a corner from the right, but the header is clear at the near post.
Kári Tulinius says: “I think mainly Spurs haven’t won anything big lately because of luck. They could have won any number of trophies in the last decade, but the proverbial ball didn’t bounce for them. That said, once a team has had a run of bad luck, it starts to affect the players psychologically.”
82 mins: A triple change for Villa – Chambers, Ings and Bednarek and on. Buendia, Douglas Luiz and Konsa out.
80 minutes: Douglas Luiz makes another shot at Lloris, but he holds out this time. The Brazilian stays up after twisting his knee after taking the shot. Looks like he’ll get away with it.
Pape Sarr is on his Tottenham debut, along with Emerson Royal. Bissouma and Doherty leave.

78 mins: Alexandra Ashton emails: “In reply to Dominic (68′), I have no idea why we have fallen so quickly from last season’s highs. Of course, many teams in the league have improved enormously over the summer, but for the last three months or so we’ve looked like last season’s Burnley.
“In fact, I might even favor Kompany’s Burnley, who are top of the Championship, against us at the moment. And we’re conceding a goal as I’m writing this, so that’s a fantastic omen for the year ahead.”
Joe Pearson loves McGinn’s pass: “Yeah, a great goal, but that assist! A kiss from the chef!”
Coutinho will replace the injured McGinn.
76 mins: Villa have been the better team from the opener and Spurs can’t really offer much of a response.
McGinn appears to be pushing forward with a hamstring problem.
At this point, Spurs can also bring Dier up front.
74 min: Villa wins the ball to Kane in the Spurs half. A through pass finds McGinn who lifts the ball into the box for Douglas Luiz, takes a touch and then coolly sinks his shot past Lloris.

72 min: Hojbjerg and Bissouma are so passive in midfield. Neither providing the passing ability that the Spurs currently need. Bissouma takes aim with a long pass in the corner and only goes out for a serve.
70 mins: David Dein emails his opinion in response to Bogdan Kotarlic (58 mins): “It can be answered in one sentence. Daniel Levy has run the club very badly, with appalling choices at critical times.”
We’ll assume, for now, that it’s not David Dein.

68 mins: A good touch from Spurs ends with Son giving Kane a hand inside the box, but it bounces at an awkward height and he can only cut the ball away.
Dominic Salmon emails: “At the start of the season, Spurs couldn’t lay a glove on any of the top teams, only getting an extremely tricky point in the Chelsea game, now we’re getting bad weather and playing like turgid lumps. of unwanted pudding batter against EVERY team in the league. Back and forth!”

66 mins: Cash arrives for Bailey. It looks like Villa are already looking to be more defensive. It looks like Cash will work ahead of Young.
Villa are running out of time and Konsa is booked for choosing an age to take a free-kick. He seems upset, but he has marked his own downfall.
64 min: Watkins receives a pass from Buendia inside the box but takes too long to shoot and Doherty gets in the way.
62nd minute: Spurs broke through from a Villa corner. Kane looks to have played Son down the left but Young reads the danger and slides in to intercept.
Perisic takes a corner from the right… and straight to the exit for a shot on goal.
Sessegnon replaces Gil.
60 mins: Bissouma is Spurs’ last man on the book. His crime is to cut Kamara’s ankles 30 meters away.
Douglas Luiz kicks the free-kick but hits the wall and goes out for a corner.
“This is like the city of yesterday,” says Jeff Sachs. “They win the possession competition but don’t score the winning goals”
58 mins: Bogdan Kotarlic asks: “What (or who) is the main reason why Spurs haven’t won any trophies in recent years? I mean, they have excellent players, good managers, lots of passionate fans, but every season is the same story, no trophies, lost years, lost talent, wasted money…”
I think it would take a book to explain it.

56 minutes: If you like the game, the remaining 35 minutes could be right up your alley. Villa seems willing to waste as much time as possible.

54 mins: Villa have looked comfortable in defense so far and Spurs don’t have many changes to make, so they will be ecstatic about the situation.
52 mins: This means Spurs have conceded openers in their last seven Premier League games. What a ridiculous record.

50 mins: Douglas Luiz takes aim from 30 yards, his shot bounces past Lloris who can’t hold it, allowing Watkins to get to the rebound first, take a touch and pass Buendia to slot home from 12 yards .

49 mins: It’s all Spurs in the first few minutes. Villa are just inviting pressure and Spurs are happy to push for an opening, currently without success.
“I’m not sure there won’t be any game-changers on the Spurs bench,” says Joe Pearson. “Tanganga always seems inches away from being sent off. That would be a game changer!”
47 mins: Roger Kirkby has a plan: “Happy New Year Will, it’s games like these where you wish there was a rule to make 2 players from each team have to be in the opposition half at all times. They can’t be offside and they have to be at least 10 yards from the halfway line. It’s just one-man football.”
