The OPEN LIVE: Phil Mickelson jokingly returns to Tiger Woods in word war on LIV Golf

Rory McIlroy pursues history at The Open this week and, incidentally, reached a historic milestone in the Old Course during his first round.

The Northern Irishman aims to win his second open championship after lifting the Claret Jug in 2014.

He started strong and the rider was working well heading into the fifth, where he crushed his starting shot to carry 286 yards.

With the conditions dry, the ball was expected to bounce a few yards down the street and leave him with a short shot on the green for par-five.

But he was denied the entire duration of his driving after hitting one of the March Stones scattered along the Old Course.
