A video game that began in the first iteration of the Game Discovery Exhibition (GDX) will be part of the sports tournament in the resurrected version of this year’s K-Days indie game show.
The opportunity to show Little Hellions, a “passive-aggressive fighter where you can’t fight” from Schadenfreude Studios, is one of the many things that makes Derek Kwan of Interactive Arts Alberta excited about GDX’s return to Edmonton after a break of six years. .
“The story behind Little Hellions is that they first showed it at GDX 2015, our first show,” Kwan said. “And now it’s debuting this year. They’ve made this trip to our side.”
GDX will be part of the Maker Faire from 22 to 24 July at the K-Days fairgrounds. “It is a pleasure to bring a greater presence of games and sports to K-Days through GDX; not only can we showcase local talent at the Maker Faire to our attendees, but we can also support the local interactive digital media sector.” , Explore. Edmonton CEO Traci Bednard said in a press release.
Now is the time to show that support, Kwan said, as Alberta’s gaming industry continues to grow.
“Alberta is home to a lot of innovation and creativity, and I’m excited for the public to see it,” he said. “If there was ever an argument to get behind the industry and maybe lower the gas pedal to support the industry, we’re about to succeed.”
During the first incarnation of GDX in 2015 and 2016, sports were not as big as they are now. But almost half of the space will be set up for sports operated by TGS Sports at this year’s event, giving new and experienced players a chance to compete for the prizes.
Other exhibitors include GDX Beamdog and its 80s nostalgia-soaked MythForce, as well as small studios and indies like Good Agreement Games, Greater Evil Games, Polar Tabby Interactive, PolyHobby Studios and RaVeN Madd Studio. Other interactive digital companies such as vrCAVE and Story City Inc. they will also be there, as well as the Edmonton Shift Lab Treaty 6 awareness board game, Exploring Wahkotowin.
Professional development will be offered during the weeks leading up to GDX, Kwan said, with talks from people like Aaryn Flynn of Inflection Games and the opportunity for developers to win a one-on-one session with Jason Della Rocca of Execution Labs.
