The UK Covid vaccine roll-out continues, with over-65s currently offering their top-up shots. The vaccine has been linked to many benefits, ranging from a lower risk of contracting coronavirus to preventing death from the virus. But, like any medicine, Covid vaccines are also linked to some possible side effects. Fortunately, an expert has shared how to relieve them.
The Covid autumn boost is currently offered to over 65s, immunosuppressed people and frontline healthcare workers.
Pharmacy2U Superintendent Pharmacist Phil Day said: “Although we have largely returned to normal life, there is still the potential for the most vulnerable to become seriously ill with the COVID-19 virus.
“Many respiratory infections, including COVID-19 and influenza, are expected to circulate at high levels this winter.”
That’s why experts stress it’s essential to get vaccinated if you’re eligible. But you might be wondering what side effects can arise afterwards.

Although Covid strikes can cause certain side effects, not everyone will experience these unwanted signs, according to the NHS.
The pharmacist has shared the most “common” problems that can occur after the autumn dose. This includes:
- Painful feeling and tenderness in the arm where you received the injection, which tends to be worse about a day or two after receiving the shot.
- tiredness
- Headaches
- Pain or flu-like symptoms.
Day said: “The common side effects are the same for all the COVID-19 vaccines used in the UK, including the new combination vaccination, but not everyone gets them.”
Although these signs are usually mild in most patients, they can still feel unpleasant, so the pharmacist offered some tips to alleviate them.
Day said: “If you need to, you can rest and take paracetamol (follow the advice on the pack) to help you feel better.
“Although fever (high temperature) may occur for a day or two after vaccination, if you have any other symptoms of COVID-19 or if the fever lasts longer, stay home and get tested.
“Any side effects after vaccination usually last less than a week.

How to book a Covid booster
Patients who are eligible can book online through the NHS National Booking System by calling 119, or they can visit their local clinic.
Don’t forget to check if your local site is still open before you visit, as many sites have closed since the initial vaccination launch.
Remember to leave at least 12 weeks between your last dose and a booster.
The expert also added that it is safe to get the flu shot at the same time as the Covid top-up.
