Early tea break
It seems the umpires have decided to take tea early to give the situation a chance to improve. South African captain Dean Elgar may then have the option to spin the bowler, but looking at the radar, it will only get worse from here.

anger, anger…
I have many songs about the rain. I’ve been trying to narrow it down to the top 10 since I got the bench call. There are not many about bad light.
This is the best I can do for now. Give us your picks in the comments.

Game delayed by bad light
Just when you thought we might get rained out today, the game was stopped due to bad light. More news as it comes to hand.
Australia 1/138 (Labuschagne 73, Khawaja 51).

Drinks: Australia 1/138
43rd over: Goalkeeper Anton Nortje returns to the attack. Labuschagne takes one off the first ball before Khawaja refuses to be tempted by the second. The Australian batsmen trade singles for the balance of the over before Khawaja again blocks the final ball. That’s the drinks at the SCG and Australia have made 70 runs from 15 overs since lunch.
Australia 1/138 (Labuschagne 73, Khawaja 51).

50 for Khawaja
41st over: Usman Khawaja packs his 20th Test half-century off Kagiso Rabada’s penultimate ball before blocking the final delivery.

Australia 1/134 (Khawaja 50, Labuschagne 70).

Labuschagne survives
40th over: The third umpire takes a very good look at it before overturning the on-field decision. A ball of dots wraps the top.

This will be talked about a lot as the day progresses. I think it’s the right call, but you see it goes either way. Dean Elgar certainly thought the Proteas had the wicket they so badly needed.
Australia 1/130 (Khawaja 46, Labuschagne 70).

WICKET? The Labuschagne dam under review
39th over: Labuschagne takes his 13th boundary with ease, pushing Rabada through covers to the boundary. The next delivery hits the Australian on the shoulder before being caught at slip. South Africa opts not to review, and that’s the right call. A ball of dots wraps things up.
40th over: Jansen to Khawaja. Three dot balls to start before a single puts Labuschagne on strike again as the sky looks threatening. AND HE EDGED IT FOR THE FIRST SLIDE! He’s out on the field, but we’re going to the third umpire to check the catch. It doesn’t look like it’s worn…
1:49 p.m
Another change of bowling
38th: Marco Jansen returns to the South African attack. Starts well with a dot ball before finding the edge of Khawaja’s bat, which unfortunately for him heads for the boundary. This is the kind of afternoon it looks to be for the Proteas.
Australia 1/124 (Khawaja 45, Labuschagne 65).
1:45 p.m
Desperate times for Proteas
37th over: Khawaja takes three off Rabada at perfect cover. Not to be outdone, Labuschagne bowls the fifth delivery down fine leg for a boundary. It could also have been very wide. South Africa desperately needs a breakthrough here.
Australia 1/118 (Khawaja 40, Labuschagne 65).
1:40 p.m
Labuschagne scores for fun
36th over: These are the stretches where a game can start to get away from you. Labuschagne starts with another boundary, blocks the second ball and then sweeps for another four. He has suddenly turned 61.
Australia 1/111 (Khawaja 37, Labuschagne 61).
