DC initiated the Warner Bros. panel. Today’s San Diego Comic-Con on a high note with the first trailer for the upcoming Shazam! sequel, titled Shazam! fury of the gods
Shazam! Fury of the Gods brings back Zachary Levi as its hero, along with Asher Angel as Billy Batson, his high school alter ego. The film also stars Rachel Zegler as one of the Daughters of Atlas, a group divinely without a comic book background, but who this time appear to be the villains. Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu lead the Daughters of Atlas as Hespera and Kalypso. Also returning are Meagan Good, Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Ross Butler and Grace Fulton. The film will be released on December 21.
In the clip, Shazam gives a quick overview of his own life, swoons with Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and makes the requisite reference to another superhero with lightning in his costume, but the trailer cuts out before we can see if it’s Ezra Miller in the role again.
Fury of the Gods returns to director David F. Sandberg, who helmed the original film, Original Shazam! writer Henry Gayden is also returning for the sequel and will team up with Fast and Furious writer Chris Morgan as a co-writer. As you’d expect, the trailer is full of Easter eggs, including nods to Aquaman’s Starro, super-ape Titano and Karaqan, as well as references to Sandberg and Morgan’s previous work on Annabelle and the Fast franchise and Furious.
Fury of the Gods was originally set to launch in 2023, until it got involved in DC’s massive release date modification. After all the studio changes, Shazam! Fury of the Gods was moved to December 2022, then pushed back once more to its current release date of December 21st. Shazam 2 will be preceded by Black Adam on October 21 and followed by Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which arrives on March 17, 2023.
