SES issues emergency warning after Echunga Dam fails in South Australia

A dam is failing at Echunga in the Adelaide Hills, prompting the State Emergency Service to issue an emergency warning.

The SES said there was a threat to people’s safety and warned residents to prepare for flooding and follow their emergency plan.

Echunga is a small town in the Adelaide Hills, about 34 kilometers south-east of Adelaide.

The dam is located on farmland between Marianna St and Churchill Road.

If the road is clear, the SES has urged people to move to the homes of family and friends outside the warning area, or to Club de Futbol Echunga.

The SES said floodwaters could rise quickly and were likely to move quickly, warning people not to walk, drive or wade through floodwater.

Several roads are closed including Aldgate-Strathalbyn Road to Echunga Road, Echunga Road to Aldgate-Strathalbyn Road, Battunga Road to Meadows Road, Strathalbyn to Sophia Street and Churchill Road to Old Mount Barker Rd.

More to come.
