The Red Sox and third baseman Rafael Devers agree to an 11-year extension. The deal was first reported on Instagram by former player Carlos Baerga and confirmed by Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Although initially reported as $332 million guaranteed, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the guarantee is $331 million, while adding that the extension begins in 2024 and includes a 20-year signing bonus millions of dollars. ESPN’s Jeff Passan stresses that the deal isn’t done as the physical exam process hasn’t started yet, but the framework for a deal appears to be in place. In a longer article about the deal, Passan contradicts Rosenthal’s report, saying the deal includes the $17.5 million salary through 2023 that Devers already agreed to and goes 10 years beyond that. Jon Heyman of The New York Post adds that Devers will not have a no-trade clause. Devers is represented by Rep 1 Baseball.
More to come.
