‘Keep calm’ and prepare for big crowds, former Tory leader says on Westminster queues
Former Tory leader Lord Hague said it was best not to “spread the idea” that queues for the Queen to be in state would be a “terrible problem”.
He told Times Radio: “It’s very difficult to say in terms of numbers, isn’t it, if you’re preparing for this event, but I think it’s best to stay calm and let the police and others calmly organize for that. , and not really try to spread the idea, “oh, it’s going to be a terrible problem, it’s going to be crowded, you’re going to have to wait too long.”
“That could also be quite counterproductive, when people say, ‘Oh, well, if there are such big crowds, we have to be there.’
“Or if you tell us not to go, well, ‘then we want to go,’ it’s a very British reaction to say, ‘in that case, we’ll go.’
“It will be exceptional. Of course, it is a once-in-a-lifetime event. So there will be large crowds, as was seen in Edinburgh, the large crowds yesterday.
“I think everybody, all the organizers, the police, should prepare calmly and don’t try to second-guess the public too much about it.”
