Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington Public Health say they have confirmed the first case of monkeypox in their catchment area.
Monkeypox is a viral disease that spreads through close contact with an infected individual and is usually endemic to central and West Africa, according to the health unit.
“The monkeypox virus has been circulating in the province for a few months and we expected it to reach the KFL & A region. There is no increased risk of monkeypox for KFL & A residents arising from this case said Dr. Piotr Oglaza, KFL & A Public Health’s chief medical officer.

“In general, smallpox is not easily spread among people. KFLA residents should not worry about their daily activities in the community. We recommend that people know the symptoms and seek immediate medical attention if any. symptoms, “he added.

Symptoms may include:

The health unit says that the smallpox of the monkey belongs to the same family as the smallpox, although the smallpox of the monkey has much milder symptoms and is less contagious. Symptoms can occur between five and 21 days after exposure to someone who has the virus.
