MINNEAPOLIS — After a quiet start to the New Year, we’re heading into our third major storm in the last four weeks, with this one spanning more than two days.
The National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning for several counties in south central Minnesota. Much of Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, is under a winter storm warning.

Light snow started falling in the south and south metros Monday night, and will continue overnight, but won’t make much more north until mid-morning Tuesday.

Tuesday will be a warmer day, with a maximum of 32 degrees in the metro. But this will be problematic because it will play with the precipitation phases and create some heavy wet snow.
The heaviest snowfall will occur from mid-morning to mid-afternoon Tuesday. We could see velocities of 1 to 2 inches per hour before a lull in the action in the evening. Wind speeds will also be between 10 and 15 mph, bringing some snow.
Lighter bands take over Tuesday evening, and light snow will continue in the metro through early Thursday, with daytime highs dropping into the mid-twenties.
The metro is expected to see 6 to 10 inches of accumulation by Thursday, while areas north and west of the metro could see even more. Parts of southwestern Minnesota could receive more than a foot of snow.
Friday’s high temperature will only be in the metro teens, but we’ll begin a slow warm-up over the weekend, with highs in the upper 20s to start the work week.
