The new two-seater Toyota GR Corolla is one of a long list of cars with more doors than seats, from luxury SUVs to work vehicles.

Earlier this month, Toyota unveiled the GR Corolla ‘Morizo Edition’, a lightweight version of its new hot hatch with only two seats, but confusingly the same five doors as the standard model.
While building a two-seater, five-door car may seem counterintuitive, the GR Corolla niche variant will join a surprisingly long list of cars for sale in Australia with more doors than seats, more than 30 with Toyota included.
It’s also a diverse list, ranging from family-friendly SUVs and $ 300,000 luxury cars to cars and vans of all shapes and sizes.

Hot hatchbacks and sporty sedans
The two-seater Toyota GR Corolla, known as the Morizo overseas edition, is the only hot sedan or hatchback currently marketed in Australia with two seats but four or five doors.
Performance cars with rear seat clearance aren’t uncommon, think of most high-end Porsches and BMWs with GT or CS badges, but it’s rare for these to be offered with more than two doors.
Family cars and conventional SUVs
Only two “main” passenger cars or SUVs remain for sale in Australia without any luxury or performance: the new small Honda HR-V SUV and the Suzuki Ignis GLX (but not the basic GL model).
Honda is violating an Australian design rule that requires all second-row seats with an adult seat belt to be fitted with a top tether to secure a child seat.
HR-V models sold in other markets without this mandatory regulation can be sold with five seats, but not in Australia, where Honda has chosen to simply remove the central headrest and seat belt and market the vehicle as a four-seater, in instead of investing. in a new rear seat assembly with a central upper link point.
In contrast, the Suzuki Ignis GLX was designed to be a four-seater from the start, with no space for the size of Honda seats between the outside seats, although, interestingly, the base Ignis GL is equipped with five seats.

Unlike the conventional model, four-seater five-door vehicles are not uncommon among luxury cars.
Although not a high-end car, the Clubman wagon from the premium small car brand features two rear doors with side hinges instead of a tailgate with top hinges, making it a six-door five seats.

Most light commercial vehicles with more doors than seats are vans, with two or three seats in the front row and four, five or six (with ‘barn door’ option) doors.
These include Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit (full size) and Transit Custom, Hyundai Staria Load, LDV Deliver 9, G10 and V80, Mercedes-Benz Vito and Sprinter, Peugeot Partner, Expert and Boxer, Renault Kangoo, Traffic and Master, Toyota HiAce and Volkswagen Caddy, Transporter and Crafter.
Meanwhile, additional two-seater cabs with rear doors with rear hinges are also included, instead of an elongated body, with static sheeting behind the front doors, i.e. the Isuzu D-Max and its twin under the skin, the Mazda BT-50.
