Meghan Markle has spoken publicly about the Queen’s death for the first time in a new magazine interview.
The Duchess of Sussex spoke to Variety about the “complicated time” for her and Harry following the monarch’s death last month.
And he also paid tribute to Her Majesty, saying she was a “shining example” of female leadership.
“There has been an outpouring of love and support,” Meghan said.
“I’m so grateful that I was able to be with my husband to support him, especially during this time.
“What is so beautiful is to look at the legacy that his grandmother was able to leave on so many fronts. Without a doubt, as far as female leadership goes, she is the shining example of what it seems.
“I feel a deep sense of gratitude that I was able to spend time with her and get to know her.
“It’s been a difficult time, but my husband, ever the optimist, said, ‘She’s reunited with her husband now.’
Meghan was also asked if she had any thoughts on her relationship with the Queen following her passing.
“I have reflected on the first official engagement I had with her, how special it was. I feel lucky,” Meghan said.
“And I’m still proud to have had a good time with the matriarch of the family.”
She added that the Queen’s death had given her and Harry some perspective on where they wanted to focus their energies.
“Right now, we feel energized and excited about all the things we’ve been building for,” he said.
Meghan was also asked about the upcoming Netflix documentary about her and Harry’s life.
The documentary has been controversial in recent days after the new Netflix series The Crown was accused of making up painful stories about members of the royal family, including Prince Philip and Prince Charles.
The Duchess said it was “nice to be able to trust someone with our story… even if it means it might not be the way we would have told it”.
She added that although Harry had never worked in the entertainment industry before, his time on the set of Suits was proving to be valuable.
“For me, having worked on Suits, it’s amazing to have so much creative energy and to see people working together and sharing their own points of view,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun.”
However, when asked if she would ever return to acting, Meghan said: “No. I’m done.
“I guess I never say never, but my intention is absolutely not.”
More to come.
