Liz Truss – live: PM says she won’t cut public spending as Starmer claims she is ‘lost in denial’

Liz Truss questioned by MPs for saying she is not ‘genuinely unclear’

Prime Minister Liz Truss said she has no plans to make any cuts to public spending but will make sure “we spend public money well”.

Ms Truss was questioned during Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) about a spending commitment she made during the Conservative leadership contest.

Labor leader Keir Starmer asked: “During her leadership contest, the Prime Minister said: ‘I’m very clear, I’m not planning cuts in public spending’. Will she stand by that?”

Mrs Truss replied: “Absolutely. We are spending almost a trillion pounds in public spending. In 2010 we were spending £700 billion. What we will ensure is that in the medium term the debt comes down. But we will not do that by cutting public spending, but making sure we spend public money well.”

Sir Starmer also accused Mrs Truss of being “lost in denial” as the Prime Minister was mocked in the Commons for claiming she had “protected” the UK economy.

Meanwhile, Kwasi Kwarteng is meeting IMF leaders today and will try to reassure officials that everything is under control.
