The COVID-19 pandemic has left scars on both the Ottawa Citizen and the news industry in general. It is no exaggeration to say that local news in Canada is in crisis, hit by the twin forces of troubled business models and declining confidence in public institutions, including the media. Both COVID demonstrated how important and timely information is, while stealing from local news organizations the income we need to survive.
