LOS ANGELES, Aug 8 (Reuters) – Hollywood actress Anne Heche remained hospitalized on Monday in critical condition, in a coma and connected to a breathing machine, four days after she was seriously injured in a car crash in Los Angeles, said a spokesman for the performer.

Heche, 53, has been hospitalized since shortly after the compact car she was driving spun out of control in a Westside neighborhood of Los Angeles early Friday morning, plowing into a house and bursting into flames, police said.

No one inside the home was injured, but the impact ignited the home and required the response of dozens of firefighters.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department said Monday that the cause and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

Heche has been in a coma and has not regained consciousness since shortly after the crash, said Michael McConnell, a member of the Los Angeles talent management company that represents her, Zero Gravity Management.

“At this time, he is in extremely critical condition,” he told Reuters in a text message, adding that Heche “has a significant lung injury that requires mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention.”

The Los Angeles Times quoted Venice Beach salon owner Richard Glass as recounting Heche’s visit to his shop shortly before the accident, describing her as “a sweet little girl” when she bought a wig red friday morning

Heche rose to prominence for his Emmy-winning work on the daytime television drama “Another World” and starred in other screen roles including the HBO series “Hung” and films such as “Wag the Dog” and “Cedar Rapids “.

He made tabloid headlines in the late 1990s for an affair with comedian Ellen DeGeneres when DeGeneres came out publicly as a lesbian. After their split, Heche married cameraman Coleman Laffoon, but they later divorced, and she spent a few years after that in a relationship with actor James Tupper, her co-star on the TV show short-lived “Men in Trees”.
