Now that’s a real rarity: God of War Ragnarok ended up on the same Metacritic score as its predecessor, God of War (2018). Both games sit at a score of 94, based on reviews from review outlets like Push Square. What’s even crazier is that the ratings are drawn from almost the same number of reviews (at the time of writing): Ragnarok’s score is based on 123 ratings, while the first game’s score is based on 118.
Generally speaking, big budget sequels score slightly lower or a touch higher than their predecessors. The fact that Ragnarok managed the same incredibly high rating as the 2018 installment defies educated guesses. We assume that it shows the consistency of the Santa Monica Studio output.
With that in mind, it’s worth noting that God of War as a franchise is ridiculously successful in terms of critical acclaim. God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok aren’t the only games in the series with a 94 rating; the original PS2 God of War also has a 94, albeit with fewer reviews to pull from.
So, at least according to critics, Ragnarok stands alongside the previous game as its equal. And by and large, it’s actually the highest-rated Son-published PS5 release to date.
