Chinese President Xi Jinping has said he is ready to have a “frank and deep” conversation with his US counterpart Joe Biden during their first face-to-face meeting in more than a decade.
The world’s two most powerful leaders smiled and shook hands in front of a row of Chinese and American flags at a luxury hotel on Bali’s Nusa Dua Bay.
Xi said the leaders should “walk the right path” and find the right direction for bilateral ties and “elevate their relationship.”
The two presidents will discuss issues ranging from Beijing’s stance on Taiwan to Russia’s war on Ukraine. “We spent a lot of time together back in the day when we were both vice presidents and it’s great to see you,” Biden told Xi as he put an arm around him.
“As leaders of our two nations, we share the responsibility, in my view, to show that China and the United States can manage our differences, prevent competition … from turning into conflict, and find ways to work together on pressing global issues that require our mutual cooperation,” he said.
The G20 summit itself will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Chinese officials speak out in unprecedented criticism of Russia on the eve of the G20
Chinese officials have expressed dismay at Russia’s actions in Ukraine, including Vladimir Putin’s failure to disclose his invasion plans, and condemned the “irresponsibility” of nuclear threats suggested ahead of the G20 summit .
Putin did not tell his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping “the truth”, the Financial Times reported, citing a Chinese official, who said the two leaders had celebrated a “no-holds-barred” alliance between Moscow and Beijing when they met only 20 days before the Kremlin launched its invasion of Ukraine in February.
“If he had told us, we wouldn’t have been in such an awkward position,” the official said.
Xi was caught off guard by the invasion of Ukraine, which Russia still describes as a “special military operation,” according to four people briefed on the February meeting between the two leaders.

UN chief urges G20 nations to adopt global stimulus package
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged G20 leaders meeting in Bali to adopt a proposed stimulus package to help the developing world with investments.
“The goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees is slipping away. We are dangerously close to tipping points where climate chaos could become irreversible,” he said.
Guterres added: “G20 countries are responsible for 80% of global emissions.” “I therefore urge G20 economies to adopt an SDG stimulus package that provides governments in the Global South with investment and liquidity, and offers debt relief and restructuring.
“This will allow emerging economies to invest in health, education, gender equality and renewable energy. Invest in their people and rescue the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
“The SDG Stimulus is a minimal and necessary step to alleviate food and energy crises and prevent further suffering and hardship in the future.
“The G20 countries, as the world’s most powerful economies, with majorities on the boards of multilateral development banks, can and must make it happen.”
