‘Not coming home’: England squad return to UK after World Cup dreams dashed
England return home with their 2022 World Cup dream on the line after Saturday night’s 2-1 defeat by France. Harry Kane scored a penalty to equalize after Aurelien Tchouameni’s opener, but after Olivier Giroud put Les Bleus back in front, Kane spurned his second chance from the spot to send the Three Lions down to the stage of quarter finals.
The England captain was exhausted after the game and accepted responsibility for the failure, but manager Gareth Southgate backed his striker to put in big performances along the way. The manager, however, stopped short of clarifying his own future with the team, saying time was needed before making any decisions.
Meanwhile, the referee’s performance was criticized and supporters of the England team appeared to alter his Wikipedia page in response to his performance.

Harry Kane ‘very, very low’ after World Cup penalty miss
Harry Kane was “very, very low” after missing a penalty during England’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to France, but manager Gareth Southgate defended his captain and insisted he had nothing to do with it what to complain about
Kane had earlier scored England’s equalizer from the spot, smashing the ball into the net for Tottenham team-mate Hugo Lloris to equal Wayne Rooney’s England record of 53 goals. But at the second time of asking, with the score now 2-1 after Olivier Giroud’s header for France, Kane hit his effort over the bar and England never recovered.
Southgate revealed that Kane was distressed in the dressing room after the game.

“We were sure, it’s very difficult to take”
Declan Rice says he is ‘dismayed’ as England really believed this was going to be their year and the ‘best team lost’, as he expresses the team’s desire for Gareth Southgate to stay on as manager as he has created something “special” that players “love”. be involved with
The midfielder believed Southgate had been “on point” in terms of game plan in the 2-1 quarter-final defeat to France, especially as Kylian Mbappe was so “calm” and both goals came against the game. Similarly, Rice said England were “not happy” with some of the decisions, but did not want to say anything else about the referee.
“I think you can see it in my face right now that I’m upset because we really think this year could be a year,” he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo says his World Cup dream is ‘over’
Cristiano Ronaldo said in a cryptic post on social media that his dream of winning the World Cup with Portugal is over, while not announcing his retirement from international duties.
Ronaldo, 37, left the pitch in tears after Portugal went down 1-0 to Morocco in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
In his first comments since the elimination, Ronaldo said on Sunday it was “time to take stock” without explicitly saying whether he wants to remain available for Portugal.
“There is no point in reacting hastily,” Ronaldo wrote. “I just want everyone to know that a lot has been said, a lot has been written, a lot has been speculated, but my dedication to Portugal has not wavered for an instant.
“I have always been an extra [Portuguese] fighting for everyone’s goal. I would never turn my back on my teammates or my country.”

Gareth Southgate reflects on his England future but has ‘few regrets’ from the World Cup
England manager Gareth Southgate is considering his future but left Qatar with few regrets after a crushing World Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of France.
The 52-year-old is under contract until Euro 2024 but wants to make sure he has the energy to return and that the decision is the right one for the team.
“I think whenever I finish these tournaments, I’ve needed time to make the right decisions,” Southgate said. “Emotionally you go through a lot of different feelings. The energy these tournaments require is huge.
“I want to make the right decision, whatever it is for the team, for England, for the FA. I have to make sure whatever decision I make is the right one.
“I think it’s right to take the time to do it because I know in the past my feelings have fluctuated immediately after tournaments.”

World Cup: The best moments so far of Lionel Messi’s magic and upsets in group stage drama
Ahead of the quarter-finals, we’ve compiled our ‘best moments’ of the World Cup so far. Here are a couple of examples…
Miguel Delaney, Chief Soccer Writer: Germany pits the magic of Fifa and Messi against Mexico
The way Germany’s admirable gesture of silence has provoked angry responses reflects a bigger victory than anything that happened on the pitch, but ultimately it’s about the pitch. There are many moments, the World Cup transcends its troubled stage as it often does, from the rise of Morocco to the acrobatics of Richarlison. In terms of its historical weight and emotion, however, there was something even more momentous about Leo Messi’s goal against Mexico. The strike itself was divine, its beauty enhanced because it was such a defining moment, rescuing Argentina from the shock of Saudi Arabia and setting them on a new path, perhaps destiny. Precisely, in the moments after this launch, Messi showed his relief in a way even more charged with greatness. “Thank you, Diego.” It was a moment of private prayer, in the midst of the most stupid public atmosphere.
Richard Jolly, Senior Football Correspondent: Ghana’s thrilling win over South Korea
Ghana v South Korea might not have featured on the fixture list. But, like the Cameroon-Serbia game that afternoon, it was both high drama and a good example of what the World Cup should be, a chaotic classic played by teams from different continents who rarely meet, in the middle of a atmosphere of mutual emotion. Ghana took the lead, South Korea counter-attacked, the excellent Mohammed Kudus scored the winner and Son Heung-Min ended up in tears, thinking his team were out. And in the end, they qualified for the round of 16 and the Ghanaians, very funny, didn’t.
World Cup: The best moments so far
Amid the controversy and ongoing human rights concerns surrounding FIFA and Qatar off the pitch, it has been an exciting ride so far.
