Germany take on Costa Rica in a must-win Group E match at the 2022 World Cup this evening as they look to secure a place in the last 16.
The five-time world champions have been on the brink since a shock defeat to Japan in their opening game but were rescued by a late goal against Spain to keep them in the tournament.
To qualify they must defeat Costa Rica and hope that Spain do not lose to Japan in the other game.
Costa Rica could also qualify after a win against Japan last time out. Their goal difference is dire after a 7-0 thrashing of Spain, meaning they need to improve on Japan’s result tonight to qualify ahead of Germany.

World Cup Results: Qatar 2022 results so far
The 2022 World Cup is in full swing as 32 nations kicked off on 20 November with the aim of lifting the Jules Rimet trophy in Doha on 18 December.
The tournament is the first FIFA Men’s World Cup to be played in the Northern Hemisphere winter, after it was moved from its original summer schedule to combat Qatar’s intense heat.
Brazil entered the tournament as slight favorites to win the World Cup ahead of South American rivals Argentina. The most wanted European nations at the start of the competition were England, Spain, France and Germany, with Belgium and Holland also considered dark horses. As African champions, Senegal were considered Africa’s best hope to deliver a first World Cup for the continent.
The tournament has not been without controversy, from the mid-season schedule that has seen a spate of injuries before kick-off, to the wider picture of Qatar’s exploitation of migrant workers to build the stadiums and necessary infrastructure . to host the four-week event. FIFA president Gianni Infantino only added fuel to the fire when he delivered his extraordinary pre-tournament speech, and what has followed has been a vigorous debate about showing support for LGBTQ+ rights in a conservative Islamic country where homosexuality is illegal.
Despite the problems off the pitch, the players on the pitch still delivered an entertaining tournament, with goals, strikes, twists and turns.

Despite the many off-field issues surrounding the tournament in Qatar, the group stage has generated plenty of excitement and spills, with Argentina’s defeat by Saudi Arabia one of the biggest shocks of any World Cup in history. The top two teams in each group advance to the round of 16, with the group winners facing the runners-up from a different group, while the third and fourth placed teams in each group are eliminated from the competition.

Germany crashed out of the World Cup group stage despite a win over Costa Rica
Germany have been knocked out of the World Cup in Qatar after finishing third in Group E despite a 4-2 win in Costa Rica.
Hansi Flick’s side came from behind against Los Ticos to win at the Al Bayt Stadium, but Japan’s shock win over Spain saw them crash out of the knockout stages for a second successive World Cup.
Japan topped the group with six points, and Spain overtook the four-time world champions on goal difference thanks to their opening 7-0 win over Costa Rica.
Germany’s campaign in Qatar began with a stunning defeat to Japan despite dominating the competition as goals from Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano saw Flick’s side down.

Their 2-1 win over Spain eliminated Germany from the World Cup. They will now face Croatia in the Round of 16.

Even with Jamal Musiala everywhere, Germany aren’t going anywhere
The team sheet suggested Jamal Musiala was lining up as Germany’s number 10, behind Thomas Muller, ahead of Ilkay Gundogan and Leon Goretzka, and between Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane. Alternatively, coach Hansi Flick could have written Musiala’s name six times.
Because the 19-year-old, with his nation needing him to turn up perhaps above everyone else in this team, turned up instead. And he decided to turn to the left, to the right, to the middle and from the deep.
In an ideal situation and the kind that Germany tends to find itself in, that responsibility would not fall on such young, not-yet-expanded shoulders as it will be when the 2026 World Cup arrives in the USA, Canada and Mexico. But this edition of the tournament does not represent an ideal situation, and this must-see clash with Costa Rica was far from the type Germany are used to. So, step forward Jamal Musiala; step up, step left, step right, step on every blade of grass in sight.
For 45 minutes, Flick’s side briefly looked like a transformed team: invigorated and insatiable in their pursuit of the three points that would take them through to the last 16 in Qatar, but only if they combine it with a Spanish victory over Japan, which surprised Germany a week ago.
