The sequel to Black Panther is finally here Wakanda Forever (Review), a grief-coping film that confronts the tragic death of series star Chadwick Boseman head-on as his character T’Challa’s friends and family process the loss of their beloved king . Along the way, the Marvel Universe also continues to expand, with the debut of Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor, the submariner.
So how does T’Challa’s death affect the Marvel movie world? And how do comic book characters like Namor and It’s Williams figure in And most importantly, what’s next for Wakanda, Black Panther, and the rest of the MCU?
We have thoughts on all of these questions and will explore them in depth, including explaining the ending of Black Panther 2 and diving into the mid-credits scene. So, as stated above, full spoilers follow from here!
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Ending Explained
The film opens with T’Challa’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) desperately trying to save her brother’s life. We never know what Black Panther is suffering from, but unfortunately he dies despite Shuri’s best efforts. Wakanda is crying.
A year later we see that the nations of the world are basically in the middle of a vibranium arms race. The UN is pressuring Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) to share vibranium with the rest of the world, and raids on Wakandan facilities are occurring. The queen fears that this means the world sees Wakanda as weak without the Black Panther, but she’s also worried about what could happen if they let the vibranium fall into the wrong hands.
This is also where Namor comes in. Hailing from the underwater civilization known as the Talokan, Namor is the ruler of his kingdom and he and his people also have a source of vibranium that even the residents of Wakanda have never known about.
The CIA has obtained a vibranium detection machine, but Namor wants to kill its creator to dissuade the people of the surface world, in their search for the precious metal, from interfering with his people under the sea. This brings the Wakandans to brilliant MIT student Riri Williams, the creator of the machine (and a Marvel character we already know will get her own show on Disney+).
While in Boston, Shuri and Okoye (Danai Gurira) clash with Namor’s lieutenants Namora (Mabel Cadena) and Attuma (Alex Livinalli), and Shuri and Riri are captured by the Water Breathers and taken to Talokan. There, Namor takes Shuri on a tour of the underwater kingdom, explaining why Wakanda must join him against the surface world, which he sees as a threat. But soon Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) infiltrates the cave where Shuri and Riri are being held, and they are able to escape back to Wakanda.
Namor is not happy with this development, and he and his people attack Wakanda soon after, resulting in the death of Queen Ramonda, who drowns while saving Riri. Namor promises to return in a week, but Shuri is able to use a bracelet that Namor gave her to facilitate the creation of a synthetic heart-shaped herb, the vibranium-enhanced plant that traditionally gave her powers Black Panthers, but that was lost in the previous film when Killmonger destroyed all vestiges.
Shuri ingests the herb and becomes the new Black Panther. Soon after, he enacts a plan to lure Namor and his people into the ocean for a battle where he can trap Namor and hopefully defeat him, having realized that without water, Namor loses his strength During the battle, Riri fights in an Iron Man-like armor she has designed while M’Baku (Winston Duke) and the other Wakandans fight Namor’s people. Shuri, in her new Black Panther outfit, confronts Namor and uses her ship’s evaporators to dry out his skin and weaken him. But the ship crashes on a deserted beach and they engage in hand-to-hand combat that sees Shuri impaled through the stomach. She fights back the pain and blasts him with the ship’s afterburners, weakening him significantly.
Marvel’s Namor Explained: Who is the Submarine?
She holds a blade to his neck, but then sees Queen Ramonda in her mind, encouraging compassion instead of vengeance, saying, “Show them who you are.” He tells Namor to give in and put his people first, just like T’Challa did with Killmonger in the first movie. Namor agrees, and the battle comes to an end.
As the movie ends, more new-style heart-shaped herbs are planted, Riri returns home safely, and M’Baku makes another play for the Wakandan throne. Namora is upset that Namor bent Shuri’s knee, but he says that she could have killed him and they are actually stronger in an alliance. And with Wakanda alone in the world, Shuri’s compassion for Talokan will come in handy in the end. We also see Okoye rescue Martin Freeman’s ex-CIA agent Everett K. Ross, who was arrested by his ex-wife earlier in the film for secretly working with Wakanda. This ex-wife is Julia Louis-Dreyfus Valentina Allegra de Fontainewhich has been slowly recruiting the thrones during Phase 4 of the MCU for its eventual film.
Shuri visits Nakia in Haiti so she can finally burn her T’Challa funeral robes, just as her mother ordered her to do earlier in the film. We see her thinking about T’Challa as the robes burn, with footage of Boseman playing around, and it seems clear that Shuri will have a more sympathetic career as the new Black Panther than if she had given in to revenge and killed Namor. during his battle.

Is there a Black Panther: Wakanda Forever post-credits scene?
As noted at the top of this page, there is a mid-credits scene for Wakanda Forever but no end-credits scene. Let’s break down what happens in those middle credits right now.
The scene is still set at the beach with Shuri, as Nakia asks if she and a guy can join. The boy’s name is Toussaint (played by Divine Love Konadu-Sun), but he tells Shuri that it’s just his Haitian name. His real name is T’Challa, son of King T’Challa of Wakanda. Major T’Challa and Nakia had chosen to raise their son in Haiti, away from the pressures of the throne, and he prepared them for his death and asked them not to attend the funeral. They did their own service in Haiti. And yes, Ramonda met her grandson before she died.
The film is also dedicated to Chadwick Boseman and ends simply with a “Black Panther Returns” title card.
Wakanda Forever Easter Eggs
Now it’s time for the Easter eggs we found…
- Namor tells Shuris that there is a mutant here. Which, of course, in the comics is also true. He’s even been a member of the X-Men! Follow the link to learn more about how Namor assembles the X-Men in Wakanda Forever.
- Basing Talokan culture on Aztec and Mesoamerican culture is a new addition to the MCU, replacing Atlantis as Namor’s traditional home. Talokan is based on a place described in Aztec manuscripts as an underground paradise where those who died of water-related deaths go. It is ruled by Tlāloc, the supreme god of rain and water and giver of life.
- Namor says the line “Imperius Rex” during his big fight with Shuri. This has been Namor’s comedic battle cry for decades. The loose Latin translation is “emperor king,” so some have deduced that it basically means, “Hey, I’m the king and I do what I want, so I’m going to kick you.” But that’s a bit wordy, so “Imperius Rex” is.
- Riri makes some movie references when Shuri is given a dress to wear, saying that this is a classic villain treatment: Beauty from Beauty and the Beast, Princess Leia from Star Wars, and the White Lady from Raiders of the Lost Ark. All properties. under the Disney umbrella, we might add.
All Confirmed Mutants in the MCU (So Far)
- Also, Riri goes to MIT, which is also where Tony Stark went, and where MJ and Ned were headed when we last saw them (even though we don’t remember Peter Parker).
- There are some jokes in the news ticker that appears in Anderson Cooper’s CNN reports. The first time one appears, the ticker reveals that Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, has an autobiography called Look Out for the Little Guy, while another mentions a trade pact with New Asgard.
- W’Kabi, played by Daniel Kaluuya in the original Black Panther movie, seems to be around and imprisoned somewhere for siding with Killmonger over T’Challa at the Battle of Mount Bashenga. Kaluuya is not in this movie so are he and Okoye still married?
- The Midnight Angels have a history in the comics as an elite sub-group of the Dora Milaje, and have most notably gone on a mission with Deadpool to kill Dr. Doom. In this movie, Okoye and Aneka put on armor of midnight angles for the final battle scene.
