Qualcomm and TSMC are looking to absolutely dominate the flagship Android smartphone market in 2023, where we expect every premium Android smartphone in 2023 to have a TSMC-made Snapdragon 8 Gen2 chip.
Leaker “Ice Universe” tweeted criticism of Samsung’s chipmaking technology, calling it a “disastrous experience” and so it should: it’s so bad that Samsung is abandoning its in-house Exynos SoCs to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 from Qualcomm in its next-generation Galaxy S23. smartphones in 2023.
Typically we will see Samsung divide its Galaxy smartphones into two camps: one market with the in-house Samsung Exynos SoCs and other markets with the Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs. But in 2023, all roads lead to Qualcomm and its next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen2 SoC made on TSMC’s next-generation 4nm process node.
Ice Universe tweeted: “Remember, buy mobile phones in the last two years, do not buy any mobile phone with Samsung process, it will be a disastrous experience, luckily all Android flagships next year will use TSMC process, including the S23 series”. .
It was just over a month ago that Ming-Chi Kuo said that Qualcomm would use its next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen2 SoC inside Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series smartphones. Kuo explained:
- Qualcomm will likely be the sole processor supplier for Samsung Galaxy S23 (compared to 70% shipment share for S22) thanks to the next 5G SM8550 flagship chip manufactured by TSMC 4nm.
- S23 may not adopt Exynos 2300 manufactured by Samsung 4nm because it cannot compete with SM8550 in all aspects.
- SM8550 is optimized for TSMC’s design rule, so it has obvious advantages over SM8450/SM8475 in computing power and energy efficiency.
- Qualcomm/SM8550 will gain more market share in the high-end Android market in 2023. The economic recession affects the high-end market less, so the increase in market share will significantly benefit Qualcomm and TSMC.
Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon said at the time when it was announced that Samsung’s next-generation Galaxy S23 smartphones would be all Qualcomm: “Before highlighting some notable milestones this quarter, I would like to inform you of an important development in our relationship with Samsung We are very pleased to report that Qualcomm and Samsung have signed a new multi-year agreement starting in 2023, extending the use of Snapdragon platforms for future premium Samsung Galaxy products globally.”
