It was 2016 and Jennifer Lawrence was embarking on her post-Hunger Games career.
The American actress, now 32 years old, had just finished the fifth and final installment of the hugely successful franchise. Mockingjay Part 2and with an Oscar also in tow, the world expected great things from her.
When it came to deciding what to do next, Lawrence had a private conversation with her A-list friend, British singer Adele, about a movie. It was space romance, passengers, which was savaged by critics.
Years later, Lawrence has revealed that Adele advised him not to take it, according to a News from New York Profile.
“Adele told me not to! She said, ‘I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies,'” Lawrence said.
After being criticized for his release, Lawrence now admits: “I should have listened to him.”
The new mother, who gave birth to a son earlier this year with husband Cooke Maroney, said she could feel the disappointment of her fan base when the film flopped.
“I said, ‘Oh, no, guys [fans] you are here because I am here, and I am here because you are here. Wait, who decided this was a good movie?’”
The film, starring Chris Pratt, managed to blow over its $150 million budget, earning just over $300 million at the box office, but was widely panned by critics.
General audiences weren’t too impressed either, as the film currently holds a 30 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The main criticism surrounding the film was that it painted a “creepy” premise as a love story. It sees Pratt’s character Jim Preston wake up early after his machine malfunctions on a 120-year journey to another planet through space, condemning him to life alone aboard the plane .
A year later and desperate for companionship, he deliberately awakens the beautiful Aurora Lane (Lawrence) without her consent and convinces her that his machine has also malfunctioned.
In a 2017 interview addressing the criticism, Lawrence initially defended the sci-fi film, but revealed some changes she would be making.
Seconds VogueLawrence said she was proud of the film, but agreed with the idea that it should have started with her character waking up first.
“I’m disappointed in myself that I didn’t spot it,” she told the magazine.
“I thought the script was beautiful — it was this tainted, complicated love story. It definitely wasn’t a failure. I’m not ashamed of it in any way. There were just things I wish I had fleshed out before jumping into it.
