A man killed after shooting near Toronto’s Union station sparked the blockade

Toronto’s Union Station was closed Saturday evening after a nearby shooting killed a man.

The shooting took place outside Union Station and the Scotiabank Arena near York St. and Bremner Blvd., not long after concluding a Blue Jays game.

Police received several calls reporting the incident around 7:30 p.m. They say the first investigative efforts led them to believe the shooting was targeted.

The age and name of the victim have not been released.

Two suspicious men fled the scene after the shooting, Toronto police service inspector Paul Krawcyzk said during a media conference Saturday evening.

One fled south to Lakeshore, while the other ran to Union Station, causing the blockade.

After the trains stopped going in and out of the station, the blockade was lifted.

“I want people to know that they can get home safely,” Krawcyzk said, noting that police will look for images of the incident.

“Tonight, police have reported that a victim of a shooting was outside Union Station and ordered the station to be evacuated,” Metrolinx media and public relations chief Anne Marie Aikins told Global News , and noted that she and her family were among the evacuees.

Suri Diaz, 29, was eating at Union Chicken inside the station when security arrived and told restaurant customers to start moving slowly toward the exit.

“A few minutes later, the station was being completely evacuated and police were on the scene,” he told Global News.

Union Station has 300,000 daily visitors, according to its website.
