2023 Golden Globes Winners List: ‘Avatar’, ‘Abbott Elementary’ Among Top Contenders

The Golden Globes are back on the air.

In 2022, NBC refused to air the ceremony, citing a scandal that revealed serious financial and ethical lapses at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the group that organizes the Golden Globes.

But on Tuesday night, the 80th annual Golden Globes returned, with comedian Jerrod Carmichael at the helm as host of the show. In his opening monologue, Carmichael joked that he was “here because I’m black,” a reference to the Los Angeles Times investigation that found no black members included on the HFPA’s voting body.

Austin Butler, who played Elvis in Baz Luhrmann’s titular film, won Best Actor (Drama). Butler stirred as he delivered his acceptance speech, in a deep Elvis-like accent.

During the ceremony, writer, director and producer Ryan Murphey was honored with the Carol Burnett Award for his influential decades-long career. Murphey was praised for uplifting “diverse voices,” “underdogs,” and “marginalized” people in his work, which includes Glee, American Horror Story, and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Murphey invited Mj Rodriguez to a standing ovation during her speech, as she became the first transgender woman to win a Golden Globe during last year’s unaired ceremony.

Murphey also thanked several other LGBTQ2+ actors by name during his speech “for making a point of hope and progress.”
