As the West continues to roast in dangerous heat, two wildfires in Northern California are growing and some residents have been told to leave, officials said Saturday.
The Mill Fire in Siskiyou County nearly doubled in size since Friday and was burning at an estimated 4,254 acres Saturday with 25 percent containment, Cal Fire said in a statement.
The fire destroyed 50 structures as it spread and forced the evacuation of about 1,000 people, officials said.
The cause of the fire, which has been burning for a day, remains under investigation and evacuation orders are in place for Weed, Lake Shastina and Edgewood.
“This incident is changing rapidly and our staff and partners are doing everything they can to get everyone to safety,” the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said.
Officials in Siskiyou County are also battling the mountain fire, which had grown to cover 4,812 acres with 5 percent containment.
The fire was burning in steep terrain and growing farther as it spread, prompting the evacuation of more than 300 people, according to Cal Fire.
“The fire continues to burn in the wood. The fire has been very active overnight. The fire is pushing north,” Cal Fire Siskiyou Unit said.
The causes of the mountain fire are still being investigated and evacuations have been ordered.
Meanwhile, in Southern California, the Route Fire in Los Angeles County was 87 percent contained at 5,208 acres Saturday evening, according to an update from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Two structures were destroyed and hundreds more were threatened, according to the Fire Department.
Firefighting operations continued overnight with a focus on clearing hot spots and building more containment lines, according to the update.
“Ground resources today will focus on clearing hot spots and encouraging containment. Excessive heat, low humidity and rugged terrain continue to pose the biggest challenge for firefighters,” the fire department said.
