Liverpool equaled the biggest win in Premier League history as Roberto Firmino and Luis Diaz grabbed braces in a 9-0 rout of promoted Bournemouth.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are fresh off winning the title last season and have started the new campaign slowly, with surprise draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace compounded by Monday’s defeat at rivals Manchester United.

Scott Parker warned of a backlash and his Bournemouth side could do nothing to avoid an Anfield humiliation, with Liverpool recording their first Premier League win of the season in record fashion.

The Cherries join Southampton and Ipswich in suffering a 9-0 defeat in the competition.

Luis Diaz celebrates scoring Liverpool’s ninth goal as they beat Bournemouth in one of the Premier League’s biggest wins

Liverpool were simply irresistible as they scored nine goals at Anfield to teach Bournemouth a Premier League lesson.

Firmino, who started in place of suspended summer signing Darwin Nunez, produced an impressive first-half display, which began with Diaz heading home his cut-back cross three minutes from time.

Firmino then provided the assist for Harvey Elliott’s first Premier League goal – a blistering strike from distance that would have been goal of the day but for Trent Alexander-Arnold’s stunner that followed .

The Brazilian forward set up that goal and celebrated one of his own soon after when he turned in a deflected cross – his first league goal at Anfield since December 2020.

Vigil van Dijk boosted Liverpool’s fifth on the stroke of half-time, with a Chris Mepham own goal packing a punch for the Cherries at the start of the second half.

Firmino grabbed a second of the afternoon before walking off to a standing ovation.

The goals didn’t stop there though, as Fabio Carvalho scored the first for the club and Diaz grabbed the second, but pleas for a 10th went unanswered.
