R. Kelly has just won a mini legal battle against the feds, who have just turned around and committed suicide to the dishonored singer after he filed a lawsuit against the prison, TMZ has learned.
In court documents recently filed and obtained by TMZ, the director of the Metropolitan Detention Center Heriberto H. Tellez, who was also named in the lawsuit, says he made the decision today to withdraw Kelly from suicide surveillance after a “clinical evaluation.” No further details on the evaluation have been given.
Last week, Kelly filed his lawsuit alleging he was being subjected to a “cruel and unusual punishment,” which violates his eighth-amendment rights, after he was placed on suicide surveillance at the Brooklyn MDC.
In the lawsuit, Kelly alleged that he did not even plan to commit suicide and told prison officials. Kelly also claimed that they put him in these harsh conditions because of his celebrity.
The feds initially filed a motion opposing the lawsuit, saying they would clinically evaluate Kelly during her suicide watch.
Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison last Wednesday after his conviction last year on federal charges of extortion and sex trafficking.
Prosecutors had asked the judge to sentence Kelly to more than 25 years behind bars, while his defense attorneys asked for up to 10 years.
The crooner faces yet another Illinois federal case, as well as a state trial in Minnesota in connection with child-related crimes.
