BREAKING DOWN,
The 230-meter bridge was built during British rule in the 19th century and recently reopened to the public after renovations.
At least 40 people were killed and dozens seriously injured when a suspension bridge collapsed in the western Indian state of Gujarat.
More than 400 people were on the bridge over the Machhu River in the town of Morbi on Sunday at the time of the collapse, local TV channel Zee News reported.
“At least 40 people have died so far and 30 others have been injured,” said Brijesh Merja, minister and lawmaker from Morbi. “Casualties may rise as rescue operations are ongoing.”
Images broadcast by the television channel showed dozens of people clinging to the cables of the collapsed bridge as emergency crews struggled to rescue them.
News agency Press Trust of India reported that the bridge gave way because it could not support the crowd on it.
